ya cant
If anyone thinks it's bad now, we're going deeper into the sh.ite in the next couple of seasons. If the two remaining Greek teams in Europe can manage to muster 3 wins between them before they go out then the Winner of the SPL will need to qualify for the Champions League. To qualify now you NEED to beat the 4th team from Italy, Spain, England or the 3rd from Germany if you can make it through the previous round(s) highly unlikely, near impossible for a Scottish club anyway. At best this is Scottish Football's last year of an automatic qualifying spot if we can hang onto it, last year for me will be the last time ever two Scottish teams are in the Champions League Group Stages together. When we lose out on Automatic qualification into the Champions League then that'll be it for our League. With no Champions League money, quality will decline again. I said so on here a few months ago, that Celtic had to save our bacon to keep us above the Greek League after rangers exit from kaunas but they haven't. TO ANYONE WHO DOESN'T SEE IT COMING,THE BAD TIMES ARE JUST ROUND THE CORNER!

ya cant
The key to the success of Scottish sides was always going to be the ability of Rangers and Celtic to consolidate or strengthen the positions they achieved last season, and the omens were not good over the summer. Did complacency keep the purse strings drawn? Rangers went into their Champions League qualifier against Kaunas having made only one major signing, defender Madjid Bougherra who arrived from Charlton Athletic for £2.5 million. Without any further new blood in the squad, Rangers crashed to a shock Champions League exit to the Lithuanian side in the second qualifying round without so much as the opportunity to drop into the Uefa Cup. No-one saw that abrupt exit coming. Only then did Rangers start to invest in the first team squad, with a further £8.6 million spent on bringing Pedro Mendes, Maurice Edu and Steve Davis to Ibrox. Their arrivals were too late for anything other than the domestic campaign. Celtic, meanwhile, spent lest than half of that amount in total. Greek striker Georgios Samaras, who had been on loan from Manchester City, was secured for £1.5m, meaning that the only 'big' arrival at Parkhead was defender Glenn Loovens, a £2.5m buy from Cardiff City. Fans were left scratching their heads when the only other signing turned out to be an unlikely capture: Derry City winger Pat McCourt, who cost an estimated £150,000 and has barely been seen since the day he signed. The two Old Firm clubs paid for their parsimony: both had money to spend but chose not to – although Rangers did splash out eventually. In European terms, this has been a painful way to learn the harsh lesson of a false economy. BERTIE AULD FORMER CELTIC PLAYER SAID THAT AALBORG WERE THE WORST TEAM EVER TO BEAT CELTIC IN EUROPE. ya cant
http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/d.../trank2009.html TEAM RANKINGS ARE HERE FOR NEXT SEASON 2009,rangers currently in 24th,celtic in 44th here is the country coefficient ,we are currently in 12th and greece on our tails with 2 teams still in europe ,its a certainty they will overtake us, so that means one thing ,no automatic place and probably just one team to qualify for champs league qualifiers http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/d.../crank2009.html
scotty mac
So without champ league does that mean the old firm will struggle for money
tc83
No one to blame but ourselves. You cant keep a coefficient up by letting Scottish Cup RunnersUp into the UEFA Cup. Queen Of the South, Dunfermline, Gretna and United have got into Europe in recent years by this dubious route and gone out at the first hurdle. This doesnt help our coefficient and abilities to get more teams in. Also, the Old Infirm have been coining the cash from Champs League, UEFA etc and have contributed next to nothing this year to improve their chances of progressing further and improving the coefficient. We are all in this together !

jimmythesaint
Rangers and Celtic both let down scottish football in Europe this year, you cant blame them for living within their means tho !! they cant attract the big name player even with the promise of european football, they cant match the wages of down south and it would be crazy to start spending big and end up fecked wi debt !! Rangers only started spending after they sold big carlos, would they have spent the same cash without selling him, doubtful,,,,,,, even with the teams they have they should still be beating Aalborg an kaunas, think we'l lose automatic entry but dont think itl get as bad where we have only 1 team in the champions league !! REX
As bad as it is the co-efficient system has branded the European cup as a joke, it is after all still named the CHAMPIONS league ! In my opinion Celtic should have been straight in, with Rangers in the UEFA cup and regardless of money and power, only one of the English sides should be in it with an expanded UEFA cup group stage accommodating them instead. It didn't do the big nations any harm before when there champions went head to head, and it's sad to see money is influencing such a prestegious cup nowadays ! Now that makes me laugh Talk about poor crowds and Celtics failed ambitions in europe but after 2 years making last 16 you would expect to raise the bar and aim for next level. It's called ambition. The only thing in decline in scottish football is Rangers, no money, no ambition and fans more worried about having a go at Celtic. Keep finding the stories it makes it all the sweeter when the league title gets won.
